Alabama Shakes is an American rock band. They were founded in Athens, Alabama in 2009. The founding members were lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Brittany Howard (born in 1988 in Athens, Alabama), lead guitarist Heath Fogg (1985, Athens, Alabama), bassist Zack Crocknell (1988), and drummer Steve Johnson (1985).
Lead singer Howard sang in numerous bands during her time in high school, playing many house parties. After graduation, she started having jam sessions at her great-grandparents' former home with the other 3 founding members. The first-ever live Alabama Shakes concert was played in 2009 in Decatur, Alabama, originally under the name “The Shakes”. The band opened for guitarist Fogg’s “full-time” band, Tuco’s Pistol.
The big break came in 2011, when the band was discovered by music blogger Justin Gage, who got word of their successful performance at The Groove in Nashville, Tennessee. He shared their single “You Ain't Alone” on his website, which ultimately led to Alabama Shakes being signed by the label ATO Records. Their self-titled debut EP, “Alabama Shakes,” came out in September 2011.
The debut album, “Boys & Girls,” followed in April 2012. It became a hit, peaking at the #6 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US. Their second record, “Sound & Color” from April 2015, is still the last Alabama Shakes album to be released. Afterwards, lead singer and co-founder Howard turned her focus towards a solo career, so the band went on hiatus in 2018. Drummer Johnson also left the band, and later got convicted of domestic violence, stalking, and harassment charges against his ex-wife in 2020.
Three of the four original members of Alabama Shakes, Howard, Fogg, and Crocknell, got back together in December 2024, at a surprise performance at the Druid City Music Hall in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Since then, the band has announced a new tour starting in July 2025; and their intention to record new music as well.
The biggest hits in the Alabama Shakes setlist to date are “Hold On” (2012), “You Ain’t Alone” (also 2012), and “Don’t Wanna Fight” (2015). You can check when the next Alabama Shakes concert is playing near you on the page above.
