Alanis Nadine Morissette is a Canadian-American singer, songwriter, and actress. She was born on June 1, 1974 in Ottawa, Canada. Both of Morisette’s parents taught in military school, so she had to move around a lot as a child. She learnt to play piano and took dance lessons in her early years, and even appeared on the Canadian kids’ sketch comedy show “You Can't Do That on Television” in her early teens.
While still a teenager, she recorded two demo tapes that were sent out to record labels. Interestingly, the only copy of one of those tapes was stolen during a burglary from the office of one of the labels, thus it was never heard by anyone but Morisette and the few people involved in the production.
In April 1991, her self-titled debut album “Alanis” was released through MCA Records Canada. It became a success, peaking at the #28 spot on the RPM charts in Canada. The standout single on the record was "Too Hot". She also went on her first Alanis Morissette concert tour, opening for Vanilla Ice.
The first album by Morissette that was released internationally was her third one, “Jagged Little Pill”, from June 1995. And it was quite worth for the label Maverick to put it out to other markets: it actually reached the #1 spot on the famous Billboard 200 list over in the US!
Throughout her career, Morissette has released a total of 10 studio albums. The best selling one among them is the aforementioned “Jagged Little Pill” which sold a whopping 33 million copies worldwide. The latest new Alanis Morrissette album is from June 2022, titled “The Storm Before the Calm”. She produced songs in a wide variety of genres, including dance pop, electro pop, rock, alt rock, and even post-grunge.
One of Alanis Morissette’s most famous songs is “Ironic” (1996), which also gained some infamy online since many people pointed out that the situations described in the lyrics don’t fit the definition of irony. The other biggest hits in the Alanis Morissette setlist to date are “You Oughta Know” (1995), “Thank U” (1998), and “Hands Clean” (2002).
