From singing in church at age five to winning American Idol at 19, Fantasia Barrino's story reads like a modern fairy tale - but with real grit behind the glitter. Born into a musical family (with R&B stars K-Ci & JoJo as cousins!), this High Point, North Carolina native faced serious struggles early on, dropping out of school and becoming a mother at 16. By 2024, Time magazine was calling her one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and she's got a Hollywood Walk of Fame star coming in 2025.

But 2004 changed everything. After claiming the American Idol crown, her debut single "I Believe" shot straight to number one, making her only the second woman to debut at the top spot. Not bad for a teenage mom who once thought her dreams were over! Her talents weren't just made for radio though. When she stepped into Celie's shoes in "The Color Purple" on Broadway in 2007, ticket sales went through the roof.

After a problem with a vocal cord, Fantasia had to stop for a while but quickly went back to work, returning to the role in the 2023 film. Between racking up Grammy nominations (and finally winning one for "Bittersweet" in 2011), starring in her own reality show, and dropping albums that blend everything from R&B to gospel, Fantasia's kept reinventing herself. She was also considered for a role in Aretha Franklin's biopic, and by 2012, she released "Lose to Win" and later starred in the Broadway musical "After Midnight."

Fantasia was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2014 and began working on a new album, named "The Definition Of..." released in 2016.
