Maria Bethânia Concerts Setlist

Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, Brazil, and known as "The Queen of Brazilian Music," Maria Bethânia is one of the most important musicians from Brazil, and known for her very innovative style. Maria began her career in Rio de Janeiro in 64, by that time she worked with the show "Opinião" and gained fame with her 1965 hit "Carcará." Maria Bethânia is one of Brazil's top-selling artists and she is also the sister of Caetano Veloso.

In 2011, Maria faced criticism for a poetry blog project funded by Brazil's Ministry of Culture with 1.3 million Reais (around $230k). Critics argued the cost was too high for a famous artist like Maria, while many new artists struggled for support.

Caetano Veloso named her after a popular song by Capiba. At the very beginning, Maria wanted to be an actress, and even though music was a big thing in her and her family's lives, she aspired to be an actress. By the age of 13, she moved to Salvador, the capital city of the state of Bahia, and only a few years later, she was invited to sing in a film but initially declined. However, she later performed in the 1963 musical "Boca de Ouro," marking her first stage appearance with a samba by Ataulfo Alves.

In 64, Maria met Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, joining Caetano Veloso to stage "Nós, por exemplo." They created Maria's solo show "Mora na Filosofia."

By 65, Maria released her first single which led to a huge boom in her popularity. Maria started to perform all over Brazil and signed her first deal with a major record label. Even though the singer was always changing labels, she still released albums like "Drama, Luz Da Noite." By the '90s, "As Canções Que Você Fez Para Mim" became Maria's top album in 93.

As of today, Maria Bethânia is still very respect in the Brazilian music community and considered to be one of the musicians that shaped the way of music in the country.
