Marilyn Manson Biography
Marilyn Manson, famous worldwide for being polemic and a mastermind of the rock genre, was born in Canton, a small city in Ohio. Manson rose to success as the lead singer of his band, which was formed in the late 80s. His real name is Brian Hugh Warner and he chose his stage name as a combination of Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, a famous singer and a notorious criminal, respectively. Some of Manson's albums released in the 90s, like "Portrait of an American Family," built his very unique and controversial style. The polemic singer has been ranked among the top heavy metal vocalists and has received multiple Grammy nominations.
Manson, at that time, known only as Brian, attended a Heritage Christian School when he was young. In 1990, he moved to Fort Lauderdale and enrolled in college to study journalism. Manson wrote for the music magazine 25th Parallel and interviewed musicians like Groovie Mann and Trent Reznor, who later produced his debut album.
In 89, Manson and one of his friends, who later became his guitarist, Scott Putesky, formed a band together. Manson had the duty of writing lyrics, while Scott was composing. The duo released their debut tape under the name of Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, only one year after their formation. Something very unique about the duo was that they were always wearing monster costumes and doing pyrotechnics during concerts, which of course, caught the attention of everyone attending their concerts at that time.
In 97, Manson debuted in a movie with David Lynch, called "Lost Highway." Ever since, Manson took part in minor roles in movies and series, like the series "Sons of Anarchy," and some movies like "Party Monster," "Jawbreaker," and "The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things."
Manson started his career as a watercolor painter, at that time, creating concept pieces that were sold to, drug dealers, yes, you read it right. That was in 99, and quickly, in 2002, Manson had his first art show, named "The Golden Age of Grotesque," held in Los Angeles. Something very interesting and funny is that one art critic compared Manson's artwork to a "psychiatric patient given materials to use as therapy," in his very own words. Bizarre, right? The critic also said that his art's value lay in Marilyn Manson's popularity and celebrity, rather than the art itself. Manson later launched art exhibitions in Paris and Berlin.
With all the controversies during his career, more controversies were added. In 99, he was falsely blamed for influencing the terrible Columbine High School massacre. Some of his works were also linked to violent events. In 2021, multiple women accused him of psychological and sexual abuse, which he denied.
Despite all the polemic, Marilyn Manson is known as one of heavy metal's most important singers, and responsible for shaping the genre together with other polemic figures.
