Paradise Lost Biography
Paradise Lost are a British gothic metal band formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1988. Widely regarded as pioneers of the death-doom sound and the driving force behind the entire gothic metal movement that followed, the band has sold over two million albums worldwide, with a lineup — singer Nick Holmes, guitarists Gregor Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Steve Edmondson.
The band signed to Peaceville Records in 1989 and released their debut, Lost Paradise, in 1990, quickly following it with Gothic, an album so influential it effectively named the genre it helped create. Through the early '90s, they kept sharpening their sound on Shades of God and Icon before 1995's Draconian Times became the record that defined them, cracking the UK and German top 20 and, in Mackintosh's own words, remaining the backbone the band is still judged against.
That success led to an unexpected pivot: chasing a Depeche Mode-inspired synth-pop direction on One Second and Host, a stretch both members later described with some ambivalence.
Paradise Lost returned to heavier ground in the 2000s and 2010s with albums like In Requiem and Tragic Idol, and by the mid-2010s were leaning fully back into their death-doom roots with The Plague Within and Medusa, widely seen as a return to form. Their influence shows up across a wide swath of metal, having shaped bands like Amorphis, Arch Enemy, and Nightwish. More recently, the band toured Europe alongside King Diamond in 2025 in support of their latest album, Ascension, continuing a career defined as much by reinvention as by the sound they helped invent.
