Selena Gomez Biography

Selena Gomez is an American singer and actress. She was born on July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, TexasGomez was born to a single teenage mother which led to financial struggles throughout her childhood. Her mother ended up finding a career as a stage actress. This inspired the young Selena to try to follow in her mom’s footsteps.

In 2002, at age 10, she was cast in the role of Gianna on the children’s show "Barney & Friends" on PBS. Her breakout role was on the Disney show "Hannah Montana". She got hired to play a pop star named Mikayla on the show in 2007.

The next year, in 2008, she signed her first contract as a musical artist with Hollywood Records. Previously, she had recorded some songs for a direct-to-DVD adaptation of Cinderella. Fellow Disney stars Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus were also signed alongside her.

Gomez’s start in the music industry was forming the pop rock band "Selena Gomez & the Scene". Their debut album, “Kiss & Tell”, was released in September 2009. It became a massive success, selling over 900,000 copies in the US and peaking at the #9 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart. The biggest hits featured on it were “Falling Down” and “Naturally”.

Her new band went on to release one more studio album, “A Year Without Rain” in 2010, before Gomez announced a break from music in 2012. She came back as a solo artist with her single “Come & Get It” in April 2013, doing away with her band for good. Her solo album debut came in July 2013, with the release of “Stars Dance”. That too saw massive success, even topping the Billboard 200 list upon its release.

Since then, Gomez has released 2 more solo albums, thus she has 3 in total (on top of the 2 she made with her band prior). The best selling among the 3 has been 2015’s “Revival” with around 500,000 copies sold worldwide. Her latest project came out back in January 2020, with the title “Rare”.

Her biggest hits to date are the aforementioned “Come & Get It” (2013), “The Heart Wants What It Wants” (2014), and “Kill Em With Kindness” (2016). She was also featured on the hit singles “We Don’t Talk Anymore” by Charlie Puth (2016) and “It Ain’t Me” by Kygo (2017).

However, Gomez has put just as much focus on her acting career as her singing career. Her biggest roles so far have been in the movies "Monte Carlo" (2011), "Spring Breakers" (2012), and "The Big Short" (2015). She also lent her voice to a character in the animated movie franchise "Hotel Transylvania"; and appeared on the Netflix show "13 Reasons Why". Also, she’s currently the most followed musical artist on Instagram, with 345 million users following her profile.
