Above & Beyond Biography

Above & Beyond is a music group made up of Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki from England and Finland. The group started in 2000 when Grant and Siljamäki, who met in college as electronic music fans, invited McGuinness to join them. Above & Beyond also got some huge popularity with their radio show, "Group Therapy Radio," and has been ranked among the world's best DJs, reaching number 4 in 2008. They've worked with several singers, including Justine Suissa. The group's popularity grew when major music labels asked them to remix songs for stars like Madonna and Britney Spears.

They played their first big DJ set in Tokyo for 8000 people and then performed at major festivals like Glastonbury and Creamfields. Their original song "No One On Earth" with Zoë Johnston was a big hit, and their OceanLab project scored a chart success with "Satellite." In 2006, Above & Beyond put out their debut album, "Tri-State," to great reviews. It included popular songs like "Air for Life," "Alone Tonight," and "Can't Sleep" that were huge on radio and in clubs. Fans voted their Zoë Johnston collaboration "Good for Me" as the top song of 2006. Later, they performed for almost 1M people in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which was considered Above & Beyond's largest show ever.

Above & Beyond's second album, named "Group Therapy," came out in 2011 with big hits like "Thing Called Love" featuring Richard Bedford. The album had a mix of slower songs and more upbeat dance tracks. Music critics praised it, calling Above & Beyond the top dance act from the UK. They toured worldwide and tried something different by playing stripped-down versions of their songs with live instruments. The group experimented with acoustic versions of their dance tracks, using live instruments. They recorded these performances in London and released them as an album, "Acoustic," in 2014. Tony explained that they originally wrote their songs this way before turning them into dance music.

The shows were so well-received that they planned a second acoustic album. They also put out their third main album, "We Are All We Need," collaborating with vocalists like Alex Vargas and Justine Suissa. In 2017, Above & Beyond released several new tracks with different singers: "Tightrope" with Marty Longstaff, "My Own Hymn" with Zoë Johnston, and "Northern Soul" with Richard Bedford.

These songs all appeared on their 2018 album, "Common Ground," along with a gentle piano track called "Always." They also made songs inspired by memorable places they performed, such as "Red Rocks" in Colorado and "Rocket Science," which they premiered for 23000 fans. In 2019, they ventured into new territory with "Flow State," a tranquil album without any dance beats.
