Hailing from a small city in Brazil, named São Bento do Una, next to Recife, Alceu Valença is a singer and songwriter very popular in Brazil. Alceu is known for blending traditional northeastern Brazilian music with a very modern type of pop and rock. Alceu brought to the genre musical instruments like electric guitars and synthesizers. That is one of the reasons why Alceu is considered to be one of the most innovative musicians in Brazil, and responsible for shaping the way Brazilian music developed throughout the years.
Alceu was born in 1946, since an early age, he was heavily influenced by legendary Northeastern Brazilian musicians like Jackson do Pandeiro and Luiz Gonzaga. His journey started at 10, mentored by his grandfather, who was a poet and guitarist. He then moved to Recife, a bigger city than the one he used to live, making Alceu learn more about urban culture and rock and roll, which were later inserted into his songs.
By 71, Alceu decided to move to Rio de Janeiro, where he participated in college festivals and events in the city. By the early 80s, Alceu's popularity started to grow all over Brazil when he released "Coração Bobo," an LP featuring a title track that was a major hit all over the country. Because of that track, Alceu went on tour across Brazil, and by 96 he joined Brazil's biggest musicians Geraldo Azevedo, Zé Ramalho, and Elba Ramalho for "O Grande Encontro," a concert series recorded by BMG.
In 2000, Alceu's popularity was growing not only in Brazil, but all over the world; he performed at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland, and a few years later, he earned a Tim Award for "Best Regional Singer" for "De Janeiro a Janeiro."
By 2015, with his legacy already established in all corners of the world, Alceu Valença published a poetry book titled "O Poeta da Madrugada." Alceu then embarked on a journey of art and culture; Alceu celebrated his journey with the "Ocupação Alceu Valença" exhibition, held in São Paulo from December 2019 to February 2020.
