Alpha Blondy Biography

Alpha Blondy is a reggae singer born in Dimbokro, Ivory Coast. Raised largely by his grandmother in an environment he described as "among elders," he formed a band in high school before his studies took him first to Liberia and then to New York. It was in New York that he was introduced to Rastafari and the music of Jamaican artists like Burning Spear.

In Ivory Coast, a reunion with his childhood friend and TV producer Fulgence Kassi opened the door to his music career. He adopted the name Alpha Blondy and released his debut album "Jah Glory" in 82.

Blondy's song "Brigadier Sabari," became a powerful symbol of resistance and an immediate hit. His African take on reggae quickly earned him the informal title of "the Bob Marley of Africa."

Alpha Blondy also recorded in Paris, traveled to Jamaica to record with Bob Marley's backing band The Wailers, and made albums that tackled apartheid, religious unity, and civil conflict.

His 86 album "Jerusalem," called for peace between religions. After a period of depression and treatment in the early 90s, he returned stronger, earning a Grammy nomination in 2003.
