Aqua Biography
Aqua is a Danish-Norwegian europop band. They were formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1995. The founding members were vocalist René Dif (born in 1967 in Copenhagen, Denmark), vocalist Lene Nystrøm (1973, Tønsberg, Norway), keyboardist and guitarist Søren Rasted (1969, Blovstrød, Denmark), and keyboardist and backing vocalist Claus Norreen (1970, Charlottenlund, Denmark).
In 1993, Rasted and Norreen produced a film soundtrack that they got hired for through a contest, collaborating with club DJ René Dif. They soon met Nystrøm and brought her into their new group, "Joyspeed". Signed by a Swedish label in 1995, their debut single titled “Itzy Bitzy Spider” failed to gain any commercial success, leading the group to cancel the contract shortly after. They also decided to rename themselves "Aqua" in an effort to restart their career.
The band got a second chance from the label Universal Music Denmark the next year, and their new single “Roses Are Red” from 1996 performed a lot better, topping the charts in Denmark and peaking at #2 in Norway. They also shifted their sound toward a more upbeat bubblegum dance-pop style.
Their debut album came out in March 1997, with the title “Aquarium”. It featured the international smash hit “Barbie Girl,” which charted as high as #7 even on the famous Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States.
The band has put out 2 more full-length studio albums since, “Aquarius" in February 2000 and “Megalomania” in October 2011. In 2001, Aqua went on hiatus, but got back together in 2007. The same repeated in 2012, but the band has been active since 2016 again. Co-founder Norreen left the band for good in 2016.
Aqua also faced a lawsuit by the Barbie IP owner toy manufacturer Mattel over their 1997 hit “Barbie Girl”, but the courts in the US ruled in the band’s favor in 2002.
The biggest hits in the Aqua setlist to date are the aforementioned “Barbie Girl” (1997). “Doctor Jones” (also 1997), and “Cartoon Heroes” (2000). In 2023, rapper Nicki Minaj released a remix of “Barbie Girl” featuring Ice Spice for that year’s Barbie movie. You can check when the next Aqua concert is playing near you on the page above.
