From a family of griots in Mali, topping charts across Europe, Aya Nakamura's story-born Aya Coco Danioko-reads like a modern musical fairy tale. Born in Bamako in 1995, she remade herself into France's most streamed female artist, breaking records along the way held by the likes of Édith Piaf. Fashion called, too-but not quite in the ways young Aya might have envisioned. In 2023, Lancôme tapped her as their international beauty muse-undeniable proof that her influence reaches way beyond the music charts.
Growing up in Aulnay-sous-Bois after moving to France as a child, Aya first dreamed of conquering the fashion world. But that wasn't how things would turn out. She adopted the stage name Nakamura-a character from the TV show "Heroes." And in 2014, she began posting her music on the Internet. Immediately, the first hits "Karma" and "J'ai mal" took off, with longtime friend Dembo Camara jumping in as her producer and manager.
Along came "Brisé", which popped on YouTube, followed by the Fababy-assisted "Love d'un voyou", which finally placed her on the French charts for the very first time. In 2017, she released her debut album "Journal intime", but it wasn't until her 2018 sophomore album "Nakamura" that everything would change. The album went diamond in France, selling over 1.2 million copies worldwide thanks to smash hits "Djadja" and "Copines".
Speaking of "Djadja"-that song didn't just top charts; it made history. Nakamura became the first French female artist to hit number one in the Netherlands since Édith Piaf's 1961 reign with "Non, je ne regrette rien." Not bad for a girl who once thought she'd be designing clothes instead of topping charts.
The winning streak never settled down: She's pulled off five number-one hits and an album at the top of the charts in France. Her 2020 album "Aya" won her a prestigious Victoires de la Musique and went double platinum by 2023. When she reached a billion Spotify streams, she wasn't just breaking records but setting new ones as the most-streamed French-language female artist on the platform.
