Bad Bunny Biography

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known by his stage name Bad Bunny, is a Puerto Rican rapper and singer. He was born on March 10, 1994 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Unlike many other hip hop stars, he didn’t get involved in “street life” as a child. He grew up in a wholesome family with a truck driver father and a teacher mother.

He discovered his passion for music at a young age. He sang in the local church choir until age 13. He also entered a school talent show as a singer. His early influences were fellow Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee and salsa singer Héctor Lavoe.

At age 19, he started to post his original music to the site Soundcloud that he had been writing since he was 14. One of those songs, “Dies”, was discovered by a record producer at the Hear this Music label, DJ Luian. Subsequently, Bad Bunny was signed. His stage name originates from a photo he had taken as a child in a bunny costume, in which he seemed very angry.

Bad Bunny's big break came in 2016, with the release of his hit single “Soy peor” (which translates to “I’m Worse” in English). His debut studio album came out on Christmas Eve 2018. It was titled “X 100pre”, which is a stylized way of spelling the Spanish word "Por siempre", meaning “forever”. It became quite a hit, reaching the top of the Spanish Streaming Albums’ chart. It even peaked at #11 spot on the famous Billboard 200 list in the US. He also went on a lavish international Bad Bunny concert tour after its release.

Since then, Bad Bunny has released 3 more studio albums, thus he has 4 in total. The best selling among them has been the second one, “YHLQMDLG” from February 2020, with over 1.4 million copies sold in the United States alone. The latest new Bad Bunny album is “Un Verano Sin Ti”, from May 2022.

The biggest hits from Bad Bunny so far are “Mía” featuring Drake (2018), “Amorfoda” (also 2018), and “Dakiti” featuring Jhay Cortez (2020). He’s also been featured on such hit tracks as Cardi B’s "I Like It" (2018), and Becky G’s "Mayores" (2017).

Bad Bunny is one of the most popular artists across all Latin America, not just his home, Puerto Rico. A Bad Bunny concert is likely to sell out in any Latin American nation. He’s also known to be a big wrestling fan. He’s performed live at WWE events. The great Puerto Rican hip hop star took part in WWE matches as well, even having held the WWE 24/7 title for multiple days in 2021.

Considering that he's releasing one album per year, and after the album release, he goes on tour, he's about to have his whole year's schedule full, lol.
