Matthew Tyler Musto, better known by his stage name Blackbear, is an American singer, songwriter, and music producer. He was born on November 27, 1990 in Daytona Beach, Florida. Musto got into music as early as 4rth grade. His earliest influences were the bands Rancid, Blink-182, and New Found Glory.
In high school, he joined the rock band “Polaroid” as the lead singer. He released one EP (Extended Play) and one album with that band. They got signed by Leakmob Records, which prompted Musto to drop out of high school and focus on his music career instead.
He eventually left the band to make music as a solo artist. Meanwhile, he also wrote for other artists, most notably co-authoring Justin Bieber’s 2012 hit “Boyfriend”, with his long-time working partner Mike Posner. He began posting to the audio sharing site Soundcloud as well, and became one of the first artists to be able to monetize their work on the site.
He released his debut studio album under the name “Blackbear” in February 2015, with the title “Deadroses”. It became a moderate success, reaching the #37 spot on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart. Since then, Blackbear has released 5 more studio albums, thus he has 6 in total. The best selling one among them is “Everything Means Nothing” from August 2020, which sold around 500,000 copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Blackbear album came out in August 2022, with the title “In Loving Memory”.
The biggest hits in the Blackbear setlist to date are “idfc” (2015), “do re mi” (2017) featuring Gucci Mane, “hot girl bummer” (2019), and “@ my worst” (2021). He was also featured on the 2020 single by Machine Gun Kelly “My Ex’s Best Friend”. He’s also part of the alt hip hop duo “Mansionz” since 2016, with Posner.
