Formed in 2003 in Egypt, Cairokee is a rock band that became famous for taking part in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, creating songs that were politically charged. By that time, the song "Ya El Midan," was one of the top 10 most downloaded songs on Facebook and YouTube. The band members are Amir Eid, on vocals, Sherif Hawary, on guitar, Tamer Hashem, on drums, Sherif Mostafa, on the keyboard, and Adam el-Alfy, on bass.
The band members had been friends since high school and before forming Cairokee, they formed an English band called Black Star in 2003. The friends used to play covers of other Egyptian songs. Influenced by Pink Floyd and The Beatles, Cairokee saw Pink Floyd as a major inspiration.
After the revolution in Egypt in 2011, the rock band released "Sout El Horeya" (The Voice of Freedom), a collaboration with Hany Adel from Wust El-Balad, which gained over 2 million views on YouTube and became a very important single marking their journey.
On the revolution's first anniversary, they released "Ethbat Makanak" (Hold Your Ground), the song once again, became an instant hit, with millions of views on YouTube.
By 2013, the band competed against Wust El-Balad in the "Red Bull Sound Clash," judged by audience cheers, and one year later, they played at major music festivals collaborating with artists like Souad Massi.
