Calema Concerts Setlist

Calema is a Santomean pop duo. It was formed in 2008 in Santa Cruz dos Angolares, São Tomé and Príncipe. The founding and only members to ever be part of the duo are two brothers, Fradique Mendes Ferreira (born in 1987 in Ribeira Peixe, São Tomé and Príncipe) and António Mendes Ferreira (1992, São Tomé, São Tomé and Príncipe), both vocalists.

The two brothers were part of the local church choir back in their island nation by the West African coast. That was where they decided to form a music duo, and named it “Calema”, which refers to a special kind of wave in the ocean in that part of Africa. In 2008, they came to Portugal to get music degrees and settle in the local music industry. However, that didn’t go as planned initially, so they left Portugal after getting their degrees and went to France, while also starting a YouTube channel and uploading their music there as well.

While in France, they performed early versions of a Calema concert and were still going on talent shows, winning one called “Luso artist” in Strasbourg. That is how they were discovered by manager Alexandre Cardoso, who helped them promote their self-produced Creole language album “Bomu Kêlê”. It was made commercially available in Portugal in 2014. They also met producer Nelson Klasszik who worked on a lot of their songs.

Their second album, “A Nossa Vez” released in October 2017, peaked at the #3 spot on the Portuguese charts, while the new Calema album, released in February 2020 with the title “Yellow”, didn’t stop until it reached the top of the charts in Portugal.
