Cannibal Corpse Biography

Cannibal Corpse is an American death metal band formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1988, now based in Tampa, Florida. With sixteen studio albums, worldwide sales exceeding two million units, and a reputation as one of the most influential and controversial bands in extreme metal history, they've become the face of death metal itself.

The band originated when members from defunct Buffalo-area death metal bands Beyond Death and Tirant Sin joined forces in December 1988. Bassist Alex Webster created the band's now-iconic name. After recording their demo "A Skull Full of Maggots" and playing their first show opening for Dark Angel in March 1989, they caught the attention of Metal Blade Records, who signed them in July 1989 after label president Brian Slagel was impressed by their song titles alone.

Their debut album Eaten Back to Life arrived in August 1990, followed by a strategic relocation to Tampa to capitalize on Florida's burgeoning death metal scene. Early albums Butchered at Birth (1991) and Tomb of the Mutilated (1992) established their reputation for shocking artwork, extreme lyrics, and relentless sonic brutality. The band achieved mainstream visibility with a cameo in the 1994 Jim Carrey film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, performing "Hammer Smashed Face."

Cannibal Corpse has experienced significant lineup changes throughout its history. In 1993, founding guitarist Bob Rusay was fired due to his inability to adapt to the band's increasingly technical approach. Original vocalist Chris Barnes was dismissed in 1995 during recording sessions for Vile due to mounting creative and personal tensions. He was replaced by George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher from Monstrosity, who brought a faster, more intelligible vocal style that revitalized the band's sound.

The current lineup features Webster and drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz as the only remaining founding members, alongside Fisher, guitarist Rob Barrett, and Erik Rutan, who officially joined in 2021 after serving as a touring member. Former guitarist Pat O'Brien was arrested in 2018 and became inactive, with Rutan permanently replacing him.

Despite the controversy, band members consistently maintain that their work is purely fictional artistic expression equivalent to horror films and novels. Webster emphasizes that the violent content is entertainment, not endorsement, while Fisher compares their songs to "short stories" that could be converted into horror movies.
