DaBaby Biography

Jonathan Lyndale Kirk, better known by his stage name DaBaby, is an American rapper and songwriter. He was born on December 22, 1991 in Cleveland, Ohio. Kirk was born in Ohio but grew up in North Carolina. His early musical influences included 50 Cent, Eminem, and Lil Wayne. He did attend college at University of North Carolina Greensboro due to pressure from his parents, but dropped out after two years to pursue a career in music.

At age 23, he released his first mixtape. At the earliest versions of a DaBaby concert, he used the stage name “Baby Jesus”. However, he soon realized that its religious connotations are a big distraction, so he changed his alias to the now famous ”DaBaby” by 2016. He got a contract with South Coast Music Group and started performing at North Carolina night clubs.

His debut album titled “Baby on Baby” came out in March 2019, released in collaboration with the major industry label Interscope Records and SCMG. It became a hit, peaking at the #7 spot on the R&B/Hip Hop chart by Billboard, and at the #7 spot on the famous overall Billboard 200 chart.

Since then, the American rap star has released 2 more studio albums. His second one, “Kirk” from September 2019, debuted at #1 on Billboard 200. However, the new DaBaby album, “Blame it on Baby”, has been his best selling record so far. It came out in April 2020 and sold 1.1 million copies worldwide.

DaBaby’s biggest hits to date are “BOP on Broadway (Hip Hop Musical)” (2019), “VIBEZ” (2019), “Suge” (also 2019), and “ROCKSTAR” (2020) featuring Roddi Rich. He was also featured on the 2020 hit single by British pop star Dua Lipa "Levitating"; as well as on the 2020 hit by American rapper Pop Smoke “For the Night”. DaBaby is not to be confused with fellow American rapper Lil Baby, who, by the way, was also featured on this Pop Smoke track.
