Era Istrefi is a Kosovo-Albanian singer. She was born on July 4, 1994 in Pristina, Yugoslavia (present-day Kosovo). She lost her journalist father when she was just 10 years old, which made her mother give up her career in music to make ends meet for the family. However, both of her daughters, Era and her sister Nora Istrefi became professional singers.
Era Istrefi’s debut single, the Albanian pop song “Mani Për Money” came out in 2013. In her upcoming singles, she made sure to include some English lines in the lyrics as well. In 2014, her single “E dehun” won at the Videofest Awards, a smaller American music award show, in two categories: best performance and best styling. She produced her next song, the pop ballad “13” in the US as well. Its music video received 200,000 views on YouTube within 24 hours of its release, outstanding for an Albanian pop song.
Her 2015 single “Bonbon” was the first to garner mainstream international attention, even being promoted by famous American actress Chloë Grace Moretz. As a result, she was signed by the major US label Sony Music Entertainment in 2016. The same year, an English-language remix of Bonbon was also released, and she got to go on her first international Era Istrefi concert tour.
Despite putting out professionally produced singles (18 of them in total) for almost 9 years, Istrefi is yet to release a full studio album. She released a single EP (Extended Play) in 2016, with the title “Bonbon EP”. As of now, there is no word about a new Era Istrefi album coming out any time soon either.
The biggest hits in the Era Istrefi setlist to date are “Shume pis” (2015) featuring Ledri Vula, the aforementioned “Bonbon” (2016), and “Redrum” (2017) featuring Felix Snow. She was also featured on the official theme song of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, “Live It Up” by Nicky Jam, also featuring Will Smith. Istefi is sometimes called “the Rihanna of Eastern Europe”.
