Five Finger Death Punch, often abbreviated as 5FDP or FFDP, is an American heavy metal band. They were formed in 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The founding members were rhythm guitarist Zoltan Bathory (1978, Szentendre, Hungary), and drummer Jeremy Spencer (1973, Oakland City, Indiana).
Co-founder Bathory from Hungary used to play for the rock band “U.P.O”. After they disbanded in 2004, he decided to team up with his friend Spencer in 2005. Bathory named the new group after the 1972 martial movie “The Five Fingers of Death”. The next year, they recruited Ivan Moody as the lead vocalist, and Matt Snell as the bassist. The same year, they self-produced their first album, which landed them a contract with the label Firm Music. That debut album was released in July 2007 with the title "The Way of the Fist", and became quite a success. It topped Billboard’s new artist-specific Heatseekers chart, and peaked at the #107 spot on the overall Billboard 200 chart. Darrell Roberts had also joined the line-up as a second guitarist by then.
As a result, they got to go on their first major Five Finger Death Punch concert tour, supporting the legendary metal band Korn as their opening act. Their second record, “War Is the Answer” from September 2009, performed much better than their first record, peaking at the #7 spot on Billboard 200. After its release, they also traveled to Iraq to perform a live Five Finger Death Punch concert show for the US troops deployed there.
Since then, the Las Vegas-based rockers put out 7 more full studio albums, thus they have 9 in total. The best selling one among them is the aforementioned “War is the Answer” from 2009, which sold over 1.1 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Five Finger Death Punch album came out in August 2022, with the title “AfterLife”.
The biggest hits in the Five Finger Death Punch setlist to date are “Bad Company” (2009), “Wrong Side of Heaven” (2013), “House of the Rising Sun” (also 2013), and “Wash It All Away” (2015). Co-founder and the original drummer Spencer had to quit the band in 2018 due to a back surgery. Their current line-up consists of the other co-founder, rhythm guitarist Bathroy, as well as Chris Kael on the bass, Charlie Engen on the drums, and Andy James on the lead guitar.
