Getting its name from their Monday night weekly gigs pub, Flogging Molly was born in 1994 out of an LA pub, bringing the world a new blend of traditional Irish and punk music that would garner them a huge following across the globe. The band's beginnings took root with Dublin-born Dave King, who had been singing for the heavy metal band Fastway alongside Motörhead's "Fast" Eddie Clarke. Released from the shackles of a record deal that forbade him from playing traditional Irish music, King finally found his calling.
The band got its name from their Monday night weekly gigs at Molly Malone's pub, saying they felt like they were "flogging it to death." These shows provided the seed that grew into the band's sound, melding traditional Irish instruments with a punk rock heartbeat. Adding in a violin player named Bridget Regan sealed the deal and completed their Celtic punk sound.
Flogging Molly picked up where they left off upon the release of their live album "Alive Behind the Green Door" in 1997. This got the attention of SideOneDummy Records, and thus came the 2000 studio debut "Swagger". Constant touring helped their grassroots popularity grow with multiple runs on the Vans Warped Tour alongside punk heavyweights like Green Day and Dropkick Murphys.
Success kept piling up with records like "Drunken Lullabies" in 2002 and "Float" in 2008, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. By 2011, they had taken matters into their own hands with the formation of Borstal Beat Records, their own label, which released "Speed of Darkness" the same year.
The Salty Dog Cruise, which they inaugurated in 2015, though, has been perhaps their most imaginative contribution to the music scene. It's a yearly festival held on a Caribbean cruise that rounds up punk and alternative bands in an incomparable seafaring music experience. Regrettably, their participation in the 2025 cruise had to be canceled due to Dave King's health problems.
It also keeps the thread from those origins alive, after a 2024 fire swept their original home base of Molly Malone's pub, with merch to raise money for the venue and its employees. They keep playing homage to what brought them here, celebrating the music of The Pogues at the Carnegie Hall celebration for Shane MacGowan and Sinéad O'Connor.
