Gibonni Biography

Zlatan Stipišić, better known by his stage mononym Gibonni, is a Croatian singer and songwriter. He was born on August 13, 1968 in Split, Yugoslavia. Gibonni was born into a musical family in Communist Yugoslavia, with his father being a famous composer and poet. In 1985, he started playing in the Split-based heavy metal band “Osmi putnik” as the lead vocalist, performing under the name “Gibo”.

In 1989, his band was dismantled, so he joined another one, the Bosnian metal band “Osmi putnik”. This was when he started he started using the stage name “Gibonni”. However, he only stayed with them for a year before he embarked on his solo career, while also writing songs for other artists.

He started doing live Gibonni concert shows across all Yugoslavia, getting increasingly popular with young audiences. In his songs, he drew from the Croatian folk music tradition, which he knew very well thanks to his father’s work. He mixed it with pop and rock elements very well. In 1991, his solo album was published by Croatia Records, with the title “Sa mnom ili bez mene”. Two years later, in 1993, he wrote the classic song “Cesarica" for fellow Croatian pop-jazz singer Oliver Dragojević.

Since then, the prolific Gibonni has released a total of 11 more full studio albums, thus he has 12 in total. The best selling one among them is “Mirakul” from October 2001, which sold around 60,000 copies. Meanwhile, the latest new Gibonni album came out in April 2016, with the title “Familija”.

The biggest hits in the Gibonni setlist to date are “Činim Pravu Stvar” (1999), “Libar” (2001), “Nisi više moja bol” (2016), and “Onako, od oka” (also 2016). He was also featured on the 2016 hit single by Oliver Dragojević, “Sreća”. Gibonni has won 43 Porin awards, the most prestigious of Croatian music awards, for his songs and albums during his career.
