Goran Bregović Biography
Imagine a kid from Sarajevo who'd end up conquering stages from Carnegie Hall to Royal Albert Hall - that's Goran Bregović for you. Back in the days of Yugoslavia, he turned his band Bijelo Dugme (White Button) into such a cultural phenomenon that calling them "the Balkan Beatles" wouldn't be stretching it too far. After they broke up, he became successful composing film music, especially for director Emir Kusturica's films like "Time of the Gypsies" and "Underground." He's performed at major venues like Carnegie Hall and has worked with many famous artists from around the world, including Iggy Pop and Cesária Évora.
Goran Bregović was born in the 50s in Sarajevo to a Croatian father and Serbian mother. His family had a complex history during World War II - his maternal grandfather fought as a partisan, his grandmother and mother's family survived a concentration camp, and his father also fought for the partisans before becoming a military teacher. His parents divorced when he was 10 due to his father's alcoholism, and though he started learning violin as a child, he was dismissed from music school for lack of talent before getting his first guitar as a teenager.
What makes Bregović special is how he bridges worlds - he's worked with everyone from punk icon Iggy Pop to Greek legend George Dalaras and Cape Verdean star Cesária Évora. From 1974 to 1989, Goran Bregović led Bijelo Dugme, one of Yugoslavia's biggest bands. As their leader and main songwriter, he tried to expand their success beyond Yugoslavia, recording an English song in 1975 and touring Eastern Bloc countries like Poland and Bulgaria.
After leading Bijelo Dugme, Goran Bregović became a film composer in the late 1980s and to be honest, he is quite good at that, starting with Emir Kusturica's "Time of the Gypsies." During the Bosnian War, he moved to Paris and continued composing for films like "Queen Margot" and "Underground." He's living proof that great music knows no borders, whether you're playing in a smoky Sarajevo club or London's most famous concert hall.
