Gov’t Mule Biography

Gov't Mule, pronounced as Government Mule and sometimes simply referred to as Mule, is an American Southern rock jam band. They were formed in 1994 in Atlanta, Georgia. The founding members were vocalist and guitarist Warren Haynes (born in 1960 in Asheville, North Carolina), bassist Allen Woody (1956, Nashville, Tennessee), and drummer Matt Abts (1953, Oklahoma).

Haynes and Woody were part of the successful rock band out of Florida, "The Allman Brothers Band". They both joined in 1989, when the band was reformed with a new line-up after a 7-year hiatus. During breaks from their work with the Allman Brothers, joined by drummer Matt Abts who used to play with Haynes in a different band, they got together in Atlanta and launched the band "Gov't Mule" as a side project. They released their self-titled debut album with their new band, "Gov't Mule'', in June 1995. However, he failed to chart in the US or anywhere else. They put out one more album in 1996 before Haynes and Woody officially left The Allman Brothers Band in 1997. On New Years Eve 1998, they put on a major Gov't Mule concert show at The Roxy in Atlanta, Georgia, joined by some other members of The Allman Brothers and of the blues rock group The Derek Trucks Band.

The first Gov't Mule album to get on the Billboard 200 chart was their 6th one, "The Deep End, Volume 1" from October 2001, which peaked at the #128 spot. Sadly, founder and bassist Allen Woody could not live to see that, as he passed away in 2000 due to a heroin overdose.

Overall, the Southern jammers have released 21 albums, including ones of live Gov't Mule concert shows. The most successful one among them so far has been "Shout!" from September 2013, which peaked at #32 on Billboard 200. Meanwhile, the latest new Gov't Mule album came out in November 2021, with the title "Heavy Load Blues".

The biggest hits in the Gov't Mule setlist to date are "Banks of the Deep End" (2001), "Beautifully Broken" (also 2001), "Gold Dust Woman'' (2015), and "I'd Rather Go Blind" (2019). Their current line-up is made up of two of the three co-founders, guitarist-vocalist Haynes and drummer Abts; as well as keyboardist-trumpeter Danny Louis, and bassist Jorgen Carlsson.
