From Atlanta, USA, Indigo Girls is a folk rock duo formed by Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. The duo met each other during high school and started to perform together since then. The band's debut album was named "Strange Fire," and released in 87. Indigo Girls got a major record deal in less than one year after their debut. As of 2024, the duo released nine albums and founded a non-profit label, with Amy and Emily being very active in political and environmental causes and celebrated as queer icons.
Amy and Emily became really close friends at Shamrock High School. Before Indigo Girls, the duo performed under the name of "The B-Band" and "Saliers and Ray." During college, they started to perform at small clubs and pubs and decided to go by the name of Indigo Girls. In 85, their first album came out, named, "Strange Fire."
With the success of artists like Tracy Chapman, some major record labels decided to invest in alternative bands like the Indigo Girls. Their major-label debut, "Indigo Girls," had hit songs like "Closer to Fine." The duo's second album, "Nomads Indians Saints," also went gold.
From 95 to 99, the band released huge projects like the live CD "1200 Curfews," and "Come on Now Social." After leaving the record label they signed, Indigo Girls quickly signed a new deal "Despite Our Differences" in 2006. The album had a different style than the other albums released by them, with a more pop-oriented style.
In 2009, only 3 years after signing their new record deal, they parted ways with that record label and released "Poseidon and the Bitter Bug" independently that same year. Indigo Girls then decided was time to have their own record label, so they founded IG Recordings. They continued with "Staring Down the Brilliant Dream," a live album, and "Holly Happy Days," their first holiday album, with both of the albums being released in 2010.
In 2017, Indigo Girls decided to innovate by touring with symphony orchestras, which led to the release of "Indigo Girls Live with the University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra." 3 years later, the duo released the studio album "Look Long."
