Jorge Drexler Biography
Jorge Drexler is a Uruguayan musician and actor born September 21, 1964, in Montevideo, Uruguay, celebrated for blending Uruguayan folk traditions like candombe and murga with bossa nova, pop, and jazz. He made history in 2005 as the first Uruguayan to win an Academy Award, taking home Best Original Song for "Al Otro Lado del Río" from The Motorcycle Diaries — the first time a Spanish-language song ever won the category.
Trained as a doctor specializing in otorhinolaryngology, Drexler balanced medicine with music before his career took off in 1995, when Spanish singer-songwriter Joaquín Sabina invited him to Madrid after a concert in Montevideo. He went on to record a string of albums there, including Vaivén (1996), Llueve (1997), and Frontera (1999), later relocating to Spain full-time.
His Oscar win brought international attention, and he followed it with 12 Segundos de Oscuridad (2006), the live album Cara B (2008), and a notable 2009 collaboration with Shakira, writing Spanish-language versions of her singles "She Wolf" and "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)".
Drexler's stylistic range continued to expand with Bailar en la Cueva (2014), a rhythm-driven departure from his earlier introspective work, and Salvavidas de Hielo (2017), built entirely from guitar and vocal sounds.
Throughout his career, he's collected 13 Latin Grammy Awards and multiple Grammy nominations, including wins for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Telefonía" in 2018.
