Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He was born on June 17, 1987 in Compton, California. Lamar grew up in a gang-ridden part of town in a family living on welfare. At age 8, he saw Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur shoot the music video for their hit single “California Love” in his neighborhood. Dr. Dre had actually attended the same high school as him! This was a defining experience for the young Kendrick, who got passionate about hip hop music at an early age.
At age 16, he produced his first mixtape, with the title “Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year)”. He used the stage name “K.Dot” then. His work got discovered by Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), a brand new indie record label founded by Terrence “Punch” Henderson Jr.
They put out Lamar’s debut studio album, ”Section.80”, in July 2011, under his new alias "Kendrick Lamar". It was a moderate hit, peaking at the #21 spot on the Top Hip Hop/R&B albums list by Billboard. In the meantime, Lamar also started to open for the prominent rap star The Game while he was touring the West Coast.
His next album, “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City” released in October 2012, became Lamar’s first commercial megahit. It went 3X platinum in the US, meaning it sold over 3 million copies in that country alone.
He has released 3 more studio albums since then. His fourth one, “Damn”, became the first hip hop album ever to win a Pulitzer Prize. He also went on a widely successful, nationwide Kendrick Lamar concert tour after its release in 2017. However, “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City” still remains the best selling one among Lamar’s full studio projects.
After the release of the new Kendrick Lamar album, “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers” in May 2022, Lamar announced he will be breaking from Top Dawg Entertainment, the independent label that discovered him and what at least co-produced each of his albums so far. From this point on, he’ll be producing his songs through his own company, pgLang.
Lamar’s biggest hits to date are “HUMBLE.” (2017), “DNA” (also 2017), and “All the Stars” feat. Sza (2018). He was also featured on the 2015 hit song by pop superstar Taylor Swift “Bad Blood”. You can check where the nearest Kendrick Lamar concert is playing on the page above.
I remember listening to kendrick right before school freshman year
The greatest rapper alive
I'm absolutely convinced that Kendrick Lamar is the greatest hip-hop performer ever. I've been to many live shows, but none compare to the artistry he brings on stage. What sets him apart is that he truly performs his songs without relying on background lyrics, annoying hype men, or lip-syncing. Kendrick is simply the best, and there's no competition.
My all-time favorite rapper... I even named my biological son after him
He is the best.... hands down
m.A.A.d city should be the first song in his concerts.
He did that a few years ago
Man that would be awesome.
