Kenny G Biography
From practicing saxophone to becoming China's unofficial closing-time soundtrack - that's Kenny G's story, a smooth jazz saxophonist born in Seattle, who gained commercial success with his 1986 album "Duotones." Kenny G has collaborated with artists like Andrea Bocelli and Frank Sinatra and contributed to film soundtracks. While other teens were working summer jobs, 17-year-old Kenny was touring with Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra. But he kept it practical too - graduating magna cum laude in accounting from the University of Washington while gigging with local funk bands. Who says you can't balance books and blow sax?
Then came 1986's "Duotones" and that little song called "Songbird" - five million copies sold and suddenly smooth jazz had a new king. But it was "Breathless" that really changed the game, becoming the best-selling instrumental album ever. And just when you thought he couldn't top that, "Miracles: The Holiday Album" moved 13 million copies. Not bad for a guy who started in Seattle funk bands!
Here's where it gets really interesting - his song "Going Home" somehow became China's universal "time to leave" song, playing everywhere from malls to schools since 1989. He's even recorded Chinese classics like "Jasmine Flower," becoming a cultural ambassador nobody saw coming. The collaborations? They're wild - from Aretha Franklin to The Weeknd, from Andrea Bocelli to Kanye West. He even holds a Guinness World Record for the longest note held on a saxophone! By 2006, the RIAA named him America's 25th highest-selling artist, proving smooth jazz could sell as hard as rock 'n' roll.
In the 2020s, Kenny G continued to make notable contributions to music. In October 2020, he collaborated with The Weeknd on a remix of the hit song "In Your Eyes." In 2021, he contributed to the soundtrack of "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run" with covers of "My Heart Will Go On" and "Gary's Song." The Nickelodeon series "SpongeBob SquarePants" even parodies him with the character Kelpy G. In 2022, Kenny G appeared on the avant-garde metal band Imperial Triumphant's song "Merkurius Gilded," alongside his son Max Gorelick on guitar. Kenny G's popularity in China is significant, with his recording "Going Home" becoming an unofficial national closing song for many businesses since 1989.
