Formed in Los Angeles, USA, L7 is an iconic punk rock band that brought the punk genre to new levels. The band was active from 85 till 2001 and then re-formed again in 2014. As of 2024, the band has toured in multiple countries and has millions of streams on digital platforms. L7's song "Pretend We're Dead" is considered to be one of the band's most iconic songs and was a huge hit in the U.S. back in 92. The band is also known for their political-influenced songs and positions.
In 1985 the band was formed by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner who met in the punk community of LA. The two young rockstars knew that they had a strong connection for music and decided to form a band, performing in the city with other musicians before solidifying the lineup with Jennifer Finch on bass and Roy Koutsky on drums.
After some line-up changes and creative decisions, Demetra "Dee" Plakas joined as drummer in 1989, completing their stable all-female lineup. By 89, the punk rock band released "Shove"/"Packin’ a Rod" and spent some time in Seattle to release new material. By the early 90s, the band was already recognized as an important band for the rock genre and it was even mentioned by Rolling Stone Magazine.
L7's third studio album, named "Bricks Are Heavy," became the band's most successful release, and had chart-topping songs like "Pretend We're Dead," which was a major hit in the U.S. and the UK. With L7's popularity growing day by day, the band started to tour extensively and sell many albums across the United States.
By 98 the band released the documentary film "L7: The Beauty Process," which showcased the band's experience, journey, and struggles. One year later, L7's sixth album came out and once again was a huge success across the market. After the album's release, bassist Gail Greenwood left the band and was replaced by Janis Tanaka from Stone Fox.
In 2019 the band a significant releasing one more album after 20 years. "Scatter the Rats," received positive reviews not only by the critics but also by the band's fans. By 2022, the band was back on the road to celebrate the 30 years of the release of the album "Bricks Are Heavy."
A very curious and fun fact is that the band's name, L7, comes from a slang term for "square," chosen to avoid emphasizing their all-female lineup and to resist industry stereotypes.
