Lake Street Dive is an American pop/soul band. They were formed in 2004 in Boston, Massachusetts. The founding members are lead vocalist and ukulele player Rachael Price (born in 1985 in Perth, Australia), bassist and pianist Bridget Kearney (1985, Iowa City, Iowa), trumpet player and guitarist Mike "McDuck" Olson (1982), and drummer Mike Calabrese (1984, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).
The founders met while attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. It was Olson who came up with the idea of forming a band, which would be a so-called “free country band,” meaning they would play country music in a more improvised, avant-garde style. However, they soon abandoned that concept in favour soul, pop-soul, and jazz music. In 2005, Kearney won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the jazz category, and the band used the $1,000 prize money and the 1,000 CDs printed prize to release their debut album “In This Episode…” the next year, in 2006. In 2007, they started going on their first Lake Street Dive concert tours across the US - however, at the time, they weren’t playing for the band for a living, so they had to make way for their other commitments in their schedule.
After releasing their second album in 2008, they got signed by the label Signature Sounds. In November 2010, they put out their self-titled record “Lake Street Dive” through their new label. Their first album to break into the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US was “Bad Self Portraits” from February 2014, which peaked at the #18 spot on the list.
The band has put out 4 more full-length studio albums since, thus they have 8 in total. The most successful of them is “Free Yourself Up” from May 2018, which peaked at the #8 spot on Billboard 200. Meanwhile, the latest new Lake Street Dive album came out in June 2024, with the title “Good Together”.
The biggest hits in the Lake Street Dive setlist to date are “Rich Girl” (2013), “I Want You Back” (2013), and “What I'm Doing Here” (2014). One of the co-founders, "McDuck" Olson left the band in 2021. However, the three other co-founders - lead vocalist and ukulele player Price, bassist Kearney, and Calabrese on the drums - are still playing for Lake Street Dive, with keyboardist Akie Bermiss and guitarist James Cornelison completing the line-up.
