Fahreta Živojinović, better known by her stage name Lepa Brena, is a Bosnian folk singer, actress, and businesswoman. She was born on October 20, 1960 in Tuzla, Yugoslavia. Brena was born in the part of Communist Yugoslavia which is Bosnia and Herzegovina today, into a Muslim family. Her first live performance in front of an audience was when she was in 5th grade at a local festival, singing a song by fellow Bosnian artist Kemal Monteno. While, according to Brena herself, it was the only time she experienced stage fright, she kept on doing early Lepa Brena concert shows at dance parties in the city of Brčko after that. She adopted the stage name “Lepa Brena” early on, “Lepa” meaning pretty in Serbian (showman Minimaks branded her with that); while “Brena” is an old nickname given to her by her childhood basketball coach.
Brena joined the pop-folk band “Lira Show” in 1980, replacing their original lead singer. They changed their name to “Slatki Greh” in 1981, then released their debut album “Čačak, Čačak” in February 1982. It became a massive success, selling around 350,000 copies in Yugoslavia. Brena was undoubtedly the standout star in the group, they even rebranded themselves as “Lepa Brena & Slatki Greh” afterwards. They put out 10 studio albums together between 1982 and 1991. Brena went on to release 8 more as a solo artist. The latest new Lepa Brena album came out in March 2018, with the title “Zar je važno dal se peva ili pjeva”.
Lepa Brena’s biggest hits to date are “Miki, Mićo” (1986), “Sanjam” (1987), “Luda za tobom” (1996, same title as her album) and “Boliš I Ne Prolaziš” (2018). She also had a considerable acting career in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, appearing in such movies as the 1982 comedy “Tesna koža”, and in the three installments of the musical comedy trilogy “Hajde da se volimo” between 1987 and 1990.
Despite being caught up in the ethnic tensions in the midst of the breakup of Yugoslavia (she is a Bosnian Muslim who married a Christian Serbian man), she remains the best selling female musical artist from the former state of Yugoslavia to this day.
