Melissa Viviane Jefferson, better known by her stage name Lizzo, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. She was born on April 27, 1988 in Detroit, Michigan. Lizzo moved to Texas with her family when she was 10. There, she learnt to play the flute. While in high school, she started rapping and formed the hip hop group “Cornrow Clique” with her friends. That is when she started to use her stage name “Lizzo”. After the death of her father, she dropped out of college and started to pursue a career in music.
She moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to do so. There, she formed an electro-pop duo, as well as all-female rap/R&B trio “Chalice”. The latter group released an album called “We Are the Chalice”. Lizzo’s debut album as a solo hip hop artist came out in October 2013, with the title “Lizzobangers”. It was released through the indie label Totally Gross National Product. However, it failed to gain any significant commercial traction.
It didn’t deter Lizzo, though. She kept writing new music and performing early versions of a Lizzo concert, while also co-hosting the short-lived MTV show “Wonderland”. She put out yet another indie album, “Big Grrrl Small World” in December 2015, with very little commercial success. But the persistence paid off, she got signed by the major US label Atlantic Records in 2016.
Her third studio album, “Cuz I Love You” from April 2019, became a hit at last, peaking at the #4 spot on the Billboard 200 list. She even got to perform a Lizzo concert at the famous Coachella Music Festival after its release. It sold around 1.2 million copies worldwide, making it her best selling record by far. Meanwhile, the latest new Lizzo album came out in July 2022, with the title “Special”.
The biggest hits in the Lizzo setlist to date are “Good as Hell” (2016), “Truth Hurts” (2019), “Juice” (also 2019), and “About Damn Time” (2022). She’s proud to be a plus sized celebrity, in fact, her back-up dance troupe that performs at Lizzo concert shows is also famously made up of overweight dancers. She’s also dabbled in acting, appearing in such movies as the animated movie “UglyDolls” (2019) as a voice actress, and in the 2019 movie "Hustlers".
