Mitski Miyawaki (born Mitsuki Laycock), better known by her stage name Mitski, is a Japanese-American singer and songwriter. She was born on September 27, 1990 in Mie Prefecture, Japan. Mitski’s father is American and her mother is Japanese. She and her family moved a lot around the world before settling down in the United States when she was a teenager. In high school, she started singing in a choir and playing the piano.

She originally went to college to study film, but changed her mind early on and transferred to the State University of New York in Purchase, NY to major in music composition. While in university, she made two self–released piano-based albums: “Lush” in 2012, and “Retired from Sad, New Career in Business” in 2013.

After a brief stint as a vocalist in a short-lived progressive metal band, her third album was produced by the label Double Double Whammy. It was titled “ Bury Me at Makeout Creek”, and was released in November 2014. However, it did not see any commercial success.

Despite that, Mitski was signed by the label Dead Oceans to release her next studio project, “Puberty 2” in June 2016. This was a moderate success, reaching the #18 spot on Billboard’s independent albums chart in the US, as well as the #19 spot on the alternative albums chart. The most listened to track on it was "Your Best American Girl".

Since then, Mitski has released two more studio albums, “Be the Cowboy” in August 2018, which became her first mainstream success. “Laurel Hell” came out in 2022. Her biggest hit songs to date are “First Love / Late Spring” (2016), “Washing Machine Heart” (2018), "Nobody" (2018), and “Me and My Husband” (also in 2018).

In 2019, the cover of her album “Be The Cowboy” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the “Best Recording Package” category, which honors the best album cover artworks. In September 2019, she abruptly announced her retirement from music, unable to cope with her work’s newfound commercial success. However, the reaction of her fans made her change her mind just as quickly.
