Steven Patrick Morrissey, or simply known by his stage-name, Morrissey, was born in 59 in Lancashire, next to Yorkshire, UK, and became famous as the singer and mastermind of the 80s rock band The Smiths. Steven's mom worked at a library and encouraged him to read a lot. In the late 70s, Morrissey worked different jobs and was part of Manchester's punk music scene. Growing up in Manchester, Steven was affected by sad events in his city and loved reading books and listening to glam rock and punk music, which influenced most of his music style.
Morrissey performed in a few bands that didn't last long but by 82 he started The Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr. The band's first album came out in 84 and it was very popular in the UK. Morrissey's special style, together with the band's new sound made the band one of the most important bands of the 1980s.
Unfortunately, problems between members led to the band breaking up in 87, but fortunately, he didn't stop with music and quickly started a solo career and released an album called "Viva Hate" in 88, which was very successful. He had more hit records in the late 80s and early 90s and became popular in the United States through lots of concerts. However, some people in the UK started to say his solo work wasn't as good as his music with The Smiths.
In the mid-90s, Morrissey decided to move to Los Angeles. During this time, his albums didn't sell as well, and critics didn't like them as much. He had legal problems with The Smiths' former drummer about money and became upset about changes in British culture. In the 2000s, Morrissey released a popular greatest hits album and played big concerts, including an important one in 2011.
He published a book about his life in 2013 that many people read but had different opinions about. He also had some health problems and disagreements with his record company. By 2024, Morrissey said that he and Johnny Marr were asked to get back together and play as The Smiths in 2025 for a lot of money. Morrissey wanted to do it, but Marr didn't answer. They later disagreed in public about who owns The Smiths' name.
Throughout his career, which of course, was very successful, Morrissey has been known for speaking his mind about animal rights, being vegetarian, and politics. Sometimes what he says or does makes people upset, but it's also part of what makes him special in music. Even with the challenges in his career, Morrissey still has many loyal fans around the world who love his music and find him interesting.
