My Morning Jacket is an American rock band. They were formed in 1998 in Louisville, Kentucky. The founding members were lead vocalist and guitarist Jim James (born in 1978 in Louisville, Kentucky), bassist Tom Blankenship (1978), guitarist Johnny Quaid, and drummer J. Glenn.
Singer-songwriter Jim James, playing for the band “Month of Sundays” at the time, decided to recruit a new group of musicians around himself so he could make music that wouldn’t fit in his “full-time” band’s catalog. Thus, he put together the original line-up of his new indie rock band “My Morning Jacket”, listed above. The name comes from the MMJ lettering James found in a jacket of his, which made him think up this playful phrase.
Their debut album came out in May 1999, with the title “The Tennessee Fire” and through the indie label Darla Records. It failed to gain any significant commercial traction in the US; but, surprisingly, it did become somewhat of a hit in the European countries of the Netherlands and Belgium. As a result, the band got to go on an international My Morning Jacket concert tour over in Europe.
Since then, the Kentucky-based indie rock band has put out 8 more studio albums, thus they have 9 in total. The best selling one among them is “Circuital” from May 2011, which peaked at the #5 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the United States. Meanwhile, the latest new My Morning Jacket album came out in October 2021, the self-titled record “My Morning Jacket”.
Their biggest hits to date are “Rocket Man” (1999, a cover of the 1972 hit song by Elton John), “Wordless Chorus” (2005), “Dondante” (also 2005), and “Touch Me I'm Going to Scream, Part 2” (2008). After some changes, My Morning Jacket’s current line-up is made up of two of the four co-founders, lead singer Jim James and bassist Tom Blankenship; as well as drummer Patrick Hallahan, keyboardist Bo Koster, and guitarist Carl Broemel.
