Paolo Conte Concerts Setlist

There's more to Paolo Conte than his voice, reminiscent of gravel and piano melodies. Raised in Asti, Italy, 1937, he grew up with the sound of jazz and blues that his parents played; likewise, his brother Giorgio did much the same. While most musicians chase their dream straight out of high school, Conte took a slightly different path, grabbing a law degree at the University of Parma and joining his father's practice.

But music wouldn't let him go. Between legal briefs, he mastered the trombone, vibraphone, and piano, jamming with Giorgio in their jazz band. Producer Lilli Greco caught wind of his talent and paired him with lyricist Vito Pallavicini. Together they crafted hits that defined an era of Italian pop - "Azzurro" for Adriano Celentano, "Insieme a te non ci sto più" for Caterina Caselli, and "Messico e nuvole" for Enzo Jannacci.

Until 1974, he finally made that leap from backroom hitmaker to centre stage artist with his self-titled debut, having set Club Tenco in Sanremo ablaze and released "Un gelato al limon." He plunged into his solo career with abandon. This trademark sound would later set the Hollywood ear: a melding of Italian melody, jazz grooves, boogie rhythms, French chanson, and Latin beats. His music floated through films like "French Kiss," "Mickey Blue Eyes," and "Mostly Martha," while "L'orchestrina" found new life in HBO's "The New Pope."

Back home, Italy's president pinned him with the Knight Grand Cross in 1999, their highest cultural honor. France followed suit, naming him Chevalier of Arts and Letters in 2001. Through it all, Conte kept blending genres and breaking rules, proving some artists just can't be boxed in - even if they start out in a law office.
