Pat Metheny Biography

Pat Metheny, born Patrick Bruce Metheny, is a jazz guitarist and composer, considered to be one of the most important artists of the genre, responsible for helping shape the genre during its course. Pat led the Pat Metheny Group from 77 to 2010. While that, Pat took part in many other projects and combos, also with his solo projects as well. Pat's music style is very unique, bringing elements of Latin jazz and progressive together. As of 2024, Pat has three gold albums and won 20 Grammy Awards, making him the only artist to win Grammys in 10 different categories.

Pat was born in the small city of Lee's Summit, just 20 minutes outside of Kansas City. The community is also famous for being the hometown of famous outlaw Cole Younger of the James-Younger Gang. Pat grew up in a family that already had a few musicians, with a particularly, strong trumpet background. Influenced to play trumpet, Pat quickly shifted to guitar. A fun fact is that this shift from trumpet to guitar happened when Pat saw The Beatles on TV in the 60s.

Influenced by music legends like Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery, Pat attended a jazz camp, where his interest in the genre grew even bigger after being mentored by jazz musicians. In the early 70s, he moved to Boston and started to get noticed after recording with Gary Burton.

In 78, Pat founded the Pat Metheny Group, together with Metheny, Danny Gottlieb, Mark Egan, and Lyle Mays. Their second album, named "American Garage," topped the Billboard jazz chart and entered the pop charts. The Pat Metheny Group's journey was extremely successful with songs like "Travels," "Offramp," and even a collab with legend David Bowie.

During Pat's career, he went on a non-stop journey of releasing albums, which all were very successful, like "New Chautauqua," and "What's It All About." A very interesting fact is that in "Orchestrion," Pat used mechanical instruments (which were customized for it) to perform as a one-man orchestra. Also, in "Secret Story" lush orchestral arrangements were featured.

In 2012, Pat founded the Unity Band with Antonio Sánchez, Ben Williams, and Chris Potter. The group toured Europe and the U.S. One year later, he decided to expand the project into the Pat Metheny Unity Group.

With all these projects and his strong influence on jazz music, Pat Metheny proved to be not only a very creative musician but a mastermind of jazz projects.
