From leading worship at 13 in his dad's church to scoring platinum hits, Phil Wickham's path shows music runs in the family. Born into the Jesus movement - his parents played in the band Parable - he grew up in San Diego's Maranatha Chapel, where worship music was like a second language. His 2003 debut "Give You My World" kicked things off, but it was "Cannons" in 2007 that really showed what he could do. Inspired by C.S. Lewis and actual cannon blasts, the album proved worship music could be both poetic and explosive. "Jesus Lord of Heaven" ended up in seven languages - not bad for a kid who started playing church songs.
Then life threw him a curveball in 2014 - vocal surgery and a month of silence had him questioning everything. But that struggle birthed "Children of God," turning doubt into some of his most powerful songs. By 2018's "Living Hope," he was topping Billboard's Christian Albums chart for the first time.
Ten worship albums, arena tours supporting Brandon Lake, and the single "This Is Amazing Grace" achieving platinum status have kept Wickham from creating. Be it dropping free "Singalong" albums or taking home Dove Awards for "Hymn of Heaven," he's proven that worship music can change while remaining true to its core.
Now in San Diego with his wife Mallory and their four kids, Wickham continues to push the envelope, turning life's hard bits into songs. From that teenage worship leader into the voice shaping modern Christian music, he stands as proof that often the best songs arise from those really hard places.
