Rebelution Biography

Rebelution is an American reggae rock band. They were formed in 2004 in Isla Vista, California. The founding and only members to ever be part of the band were vocalist and guitarist Eric Rachmany, vocalist and guitarist Matt Velasquez, keyboardist Rory Carey, bassist Marley D. Williams, and drummer Wesley Finley.

The 5 founders all attended UC Santa Barbara in Isla Vista, California - although they were majoring in different subjects. They spent their first years performing early Rebelution concert shows around their campus. They also self-produced and released an EP, the self-titled “Rebelution”, in 2006. Their debut album came out in June 2007, with the title “Courage to Grow”, another self-released record. It peaked at #4 on Billboard’s Reggae Album charts. It also charted high in the iTunes store, which earned them the Best Reggae Album 2007 award by the platform’s editors. However, the same year, also in 2007, co-founder Matt Velasquez left the band due to him feeling the touring lifestyle took too much of a toll on him. The four remaining founders make up the band’s line-up to this day.

Rebelution’s second album, “Bright Side of Life” from August 2009, was released by the indie label Controlled Substance Sound Labs. It was their first LP to enter the famous Billboard 200 chart, peaking at the #54 spot. Since then, the Californian reggae band has put out 5 more studio albums, thus they have 7 in total. The best selling one among them is “Count Me In” from June 2014, which sold over 17,000 copies in the first of week of its release in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Rebelution album came out in June 2021, with the title “In The Moment”.

The biggest hits in the Rebelution setlist to date are “Safe and Sound” (2007), “Feeling Alright” (also 2007), “So High” (2012), and “Roots Reggae Music”. Check where the next Rebelution concert is playing near you on our page above.
