Skillet Biography
Formed in Memphis, USA, Skillet is an iconic Christian rock band formed in the 90s. As of today, Skillet's core members include John Cooper, Korey Cooper, Jen Ledger, and Seth Morrison. Skillet has released eleven studio albums, with two, "Collide" and "Comatose," earning Grammy nominations. Their albums "Comatose" and "Awake" are certified Platinum and Double Platinum, while "Rise" and "Unleashed" are certified Gold as of 2020.
Formed in 1996 when John Cooper, previously with Seraph, and Ken Steorts, from Urgent Cry, decided to create a new band encouraged by their pastor. Initially named as a playful nod to mixing diverse musical styles, they released their debut self-titled album in 1996.
After a few lineup changes, including Trey McClurkin on drums and later Lori Peters, Skillet evolved stylistically from grunge to industrial rock with their second album "Hey You, I Love Your Soul" in 1998.
In 2003, Skillet released "Collide," their fifth album. Inspired by P.O.D., the album included hits like "Savior" and "Collide," earning a Grammy nomination. Following Lori Peters' retirement in 2008, Jen Ledger joined as drummer. Their next album, "Comatose," released in 2006, featured chart-toppers like "Rebirthing" and "Whispers in the Dark," leading to a live CD/DVD release, "Comatose Comes Alive" in 2008. "Awake," was released one year later, which brought Skillet to the mainstream.
In 2011, John announced new music rehearsals via Twitter, gearing up for a forthcoming album. Scheduled amidst their Winter Jam Tour commitments, recording for the new album began in early 2012, aiming for a late 2012 release. Described as a diverse mix by John Cooper, the album, titled "Rise," was eventually released one year later. The album debuted at No. 4 on Billboard 200, featuring the hit single "Sick of It," which topped the Rock and Christian charts.
In 2019, Billboard highlighted Skillet's tenth album, "Victorious," noting the band's global sales surpassing 12 million. The first single, "Legendary," dropped, followed by "Save Me," "Anchor," and "You Ain't Ready." The album itself released later that year. A deluxe version, "Victorious: The Aftermath," came out in 2020.
In 2021, John Cooper faced criticism for remarks about the Grammys, which he clarified in a video. Skillet released "Surviving the Game," their first song in a year, and announced their eleventh album, "Dominion," in 2022. They also released singles "Standing in the Storm," "Refuge," and the title track "Dominion." "Psycho In My Head," another single from "Dominion," was used as the theme song for WWE's Elimination Chamber in 2023.
