Soen Biography

Since their formal launch in 2010, Soen was actually a supergroup that brought back former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez and ex-Death bassist Steve Di Giorgio and the abrasive vocals of Joel Ekelöf. Though technical ability existed from the very beginning, it was their potential to create something truly atmospheric in progressive metal that distinguished them.

Their 2012 album "Cognitive" sparked controversy among the prog metal community day one. Although some critics praised Tool-like sound, the band admitted their influence but did what they had to do and Lopez famously declaring that Tool "became not only a band but a genre." Their borrowing of producer David Bottrill (who, ironically, had worked with Tool) sharpened their sound into something technically gobsmacking but emotionally resonant.

With subsequent albums like "Tellurian" (2014) and "Lykaia" (2017), Soen continued to grow. The latter's insistence on doing nothing but using analog recording equipment was a testament to their dedication to producing an earthy, organic sound. By the time they released "Lotus" in 2019 and "Imperial" in 2021, they had carved out their own progressive metal identity.

With their sixth album, 2023's "Memorial", Soen have made themselves more than a supergroup - they're a crucial component of modern progressive metal. Their journey shows how the utilization of influences during the creation process can establish something familiar yet groundbreaking. With line-up changes and stylistic evolution, they've stayed true to their mission of creating music that's, as Lopez puts it, "melodic, heavy, intricate and very different than everything else."
