Stephen Marley Biography

Stephen Marley is a Jamaican-American reggae singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, born April 20, 1972, in Wilmington, Delaware, and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. The second son of reggae icon Bob Marley, Stephen is an eight-time Grammy Award winner — three as a solo artist, two for producing his brother Damian Marley's albums Halfway Tree and Welcome to Jamrock, and three more as a member of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.

Stephen started performing at just seven years old, joining his siblings in the family band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers in 1979. He and Ziggy were mentored directly by their father and shared the stage with Bob Marley & The Wailers at major shows before performing at their father's funeral in 1981. Through the '80s and '90s, the Melody Makers scored hits like "Tomorrow People" and "Look Who's Dancing," with Stephen earning the nickname "Raggamuffin" for bringing dancehall toasting into the group's sound.

In the late '90s, Stephen shifted behind the boards, producing hit albums for brothers Julian Marley and Damian, plus 1999's Chant Down Babylon, a genre-bending remix of his father's catalog featuring Lauryn Hill and Busta Rhymes.

He finally stepped into the spotlight as a solo artist with Mind Control (2007), followed by Mind Control Acoustic (2008), Revelation Pt. 1 (2011) — which won a Grammy — and Revelation Pt. 2 (2016). In 2017, he and Pitbull performed their single "Options" on The Tonight Show. His most recent album, Old Soul, arrived in September 2023, continuing a career built on both family legacy and his own restless creative ambition — one he's carried alongside his brothers into projects like The Marley Brothers touring collective.
