Styx Biography

Formed in Chicago, USA in the early 70s, Styx is a rock band known for revolutionizing the genre and bringing to the table elements of hard rock, melodic rock, and acoustic. Throughout their very successful journey, Stynx's hits like "Lady," topped charts all over the world, and other albums and projects by the band achieved multi-platinum status. Styx achieved eight top 10 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sold over 20 million records with A&M from 1975 to 1984. Dennis DeYoung, a founding member, wrote and sang most of their top hits but has not been with the band since 1999.

In the early 60s, more specifically, in 1961, twin brothers Chuck and John Panozzo began playing music with their neighbor Dennis DeYoung in Chicago. The rock enthusiasts decided to form a band, at that time, called The Tradewinds. After a few changes in the lineup, including Chuck's brief departure and return, by 1972 the band signed to a record label and officially became Styx. In 75, "Lady" from "Styx II" became a hit and helped the band establish themselves in the music industry.

By 79, the album "Cornerstone," was a major hit and helped the band progress further. "Babe," was the album's number-one hit and earned Styx awards and nominations. During that time, the band members had some disagreements which led to DeYoung's brief firing. Despite the internal issues, in 81, "Paradise Theatre," was released and the band went on a very successful tour.

In 83, "Kilroy Was Here" a rock opera album was released and brought a very innovative project. By the early 90s, Styx reunited in 1990 with Glen Burtnik replacing Tommy Shaw, who was with Damn Yankees. "Edge of the Century," was released and despite all the success of the recently released albums and sold-out concerts, the band was dropped by their record label. In 96, Styx reunited again and went on tour with "Return to Paradise."

"Brave New World," marked the rock band's first studio album in almost ten years. Released in 1999, the album's success led the band to go on tour once again, but this time, Lawrence Gowan replaced Dennis DeYoung due to DeYoung's illness. Bassist Chuck Panozzo faced health issues related to HIV/AIDS and publicly came out in 2001.

In 2004, Styx played at an Eric Clapton's festival, covering songs by Jimi Hendrix, and many other rock stars. From 2014 to 2017, the band went on tour with many other bands, from Def Leppard in 2015, to Foreigner and Don Felder in 2014. By 2017, "The Mission," a concept album was released by the band.

A fun fact behind the name "Styx" is that it was chosen because it was the least disliked by the band members. Before changing to Styx, the band also had the names TW4 and The Tradewinds before that.
