Taking Back Sunday Biography

Taking Back Sunday is an American rock band. They were formed in 1999 in Long Island, New York. The founding members were two guitarists, Jesse Lacey (born in 1978 in Levittown, New York) and Eddie Reyes (1972, Amityville, New York).

Reyes was formerly part of the music groups The Movielife, Mind Over Matter, and Inside, while Lacey played for the Rookie Lot. In November 1999 on Long Island, they decided to form a new band. They recruited yet another guitarist, John Nolan, which made Lacey switch to the bass; as well as vocalist Antonio Longo and drummer Steven DeJoseph. One of the co-founders, Lacey, left the band before any music was recorded after Nolan made advances at his girlfriend. Lacey was replaced by Adam Lazzara on the bass, then went on to found another successful rock band, Brand New - the two bands later became fierce rivals. Drummer DeJoseph was also replaced, Mark O'Connell took his spot.

Reyes and the rest of the crew released their self-titled debut EP, “Taking Back Sunday”, in 2000. The band’s name comes from a song’s title by The Waiting Process, a band that some of the early members knew personally. After the release of the first EP, former bassist Lazzara took on the lead vocalist role. They started doing early Taking Back Sunday concert shows in small LI venues. In 2001, they signed their first record deal with the label Victory Records, after an industry friend set up a private Taking Back Sunday concert for the label’s founder.

Taking Back Sunday’s debut album came out in March 2002, with the title “Tell All Your Friends”. It became a moderate hit, getting into the famous Billboard 200 chart at the #183 spot, and reaching the #9 spot on the new artist-specific Billboard Heatseekers chart. Since then, TBS has released 6 more studio albums, thus they have 7 in total. The best selling one among them is “Louder Now” from April 2006, which sold around 560,000 copies. Meanwhile, the latest new Taking Back Sunday album came out in September 2016, with the title “Tidal Wave”.

The biggest hits in the Taking Back Sunday setlist to date are “Cute Without the 'E' (Cut From the Team)” (2002), “You're So Last Summer” (also 2002), “This Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know)” (2004), and “MakeDamnSure” (2006). After many, many changes, the band’s current line-up is made up of lead guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist Josh Nolan, lead vocalist Adam Lazzara, drummer Mark O'Connell, bassist Michael Lipkin, and second bassist Shaun Cooper. It includes neither of the two co-founders, as Reyes too left the band in 2018 due to his struggle with alcoholism.
