The Amity Affliction is a post-hardcore band that was formed in 2003 in Gympie, Queensland. The name "Amity" represents "friendship," whereas "Affliction" represents "emotional pain in terms of living with that friendship." The band was named after one of its members' dear friends who was just seventeen when his life was cut short in a car accident.
The band was awarded for writing very personal lyrics which included themes concerning depression, anxiety, death, drugs, and suicide. Much of these emotions are actually drawn directly from personal experiences of the lead vocalist. They are amongst the most influential voices to emerge from within the heavy music scene in Australia.
The Amity Affliction’s origins started off doing concerts in schools and playing auditions during lunch breaks. Following their self-titled demo in 2004, lead vocalist Joel Birch was added to the band later that year. Debut record Severed Ties was released in 2008. The record made its debut with a decent top 26 position in the chart in the Australian market. It was packed with guest appearances from well-known figures associated with Australian hardcore.
They finally made a breakthrough with Youngbloods in 2010. It first entered the ARIA charts at number six after signing with Roadrunner Records in 2012. They finally topped the charts with ‘Chasing Ghosts’ in 2012. Ironically, songs against suicide are included in the CD contents. But its contents are images depicting suicide. They later apologized for these images. They are quite sensitive to images involving suicide.
They’ve been a band which has experienced quite a lot of membership shifts. With founding member Ahren Stringer being fired in February 2025, there are no original members left in the band. The band’s current members include vocalist Joel Birch, guitarist Dan Brown, drummer Joe Longobardi, and bassist Jonathan Reeves.
The Amity Affliction has eight studio albums so far. They reached four top positions with albums ‘Chasing Ghosts’, ‘Let the Ocean Take Me’ in 2014, ‘This Could Be Heartbreak’ in 2016, and ‘Misery’ in 2018. They recently released another new album named ‘Not Without My Ghosts’ in May 2023. They are nominated for numerous awards. They won ‘Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album’ in 2020.
