The Dead South Biography
The Dead South is a grunge band from Regina, Canada, that innovated by swapping their electric guitars for banjos and mandolins. The band was born in 2012, when Nate Hilts and Danny Kenyon convinced their friends Scott Pringle and Colton Crawford to jump into the deep end of bluegrass music. None of them imagined their little experiment would explode into a global phenomenon. The band was just selling their first EP at local shows when something magical happened. Their video for "In Hell, I'll Be in Good Company" caught fire on YouTube in 2016 and went viral, racking up a mind-boggling 400M views. Suddenly, the Canadian bluegrass band was charting on Billboard with year-old music.
They kept pushing boundaries with "Illusion & Doubt," throwing a cello into the bluegrass mix and snagging a Juno Award along the way. By 2019, they'd moved 90k albums and their Spotify streams were through the roof. Even with lineup changes – Crawford left in 2015, and came back in 2018 – and some controversies to weather, they kept evolving. The Dead South had more success with their 2019 album "Sugar & Joy," which reached number one on the American bluegrass charts. Critics really liked how the album mixed different styles of music while staying true to their roots, with one reviewer giving it 9 out of 10 and praising how each song took listeners in unexpected directions.
In 2020, the band faced controversy when Danny Kenyon was accused of sexual misconduct and left the group. The band and their record label also had to address earlier concerns about their song "Banjo Odyssey," promising to make changes and create a code of conduct. Kenyon rejoined the band one year later. From Regina basement jams to international stages, The Dead South turned bluegrass on its head and made it their own. Not bad for a bunch of ex-grunge musicians who decided to try something different.
