TheFatRat Biography

Christian Friedrich Johannes Büttner, better known by his stage name TheFatRat, is a German DJ, music producer, and electronic musician. He was born on June 1, 1979 in Göttingen, West Germany. Büttner was somewhat of a musical prodigy, learning to play the flute at age 4 and learning to play the piano by age 6. He originally aspired to become a classical conductor. He started to produce his own music at age 22.

As a young adult, he found employment by producing music for commercials, films, or television shows. Only later did he start performing as a DJ. In 2010, he produced the beat for the single “Mignon Mignon”, performed by an animated mole called "René la Taupe", which actually topped the chart in France.

In 2012, Büttner started to release remixes of popular songs, such as Flo Rida’s "Very Good Feeling" or Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” on his Youtube channel. That is when he started to use his alias “TheFatRat”. The next year, in 2013, he produced his first original single, with the title “Do Be Do Be Do”. His first EP (Extended Play) bore the same title as his debut single.

His second EP, “Jackpot”, was released in November 2016 through the major American record label Universal Music. It peaked at the #23 spot on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart. After this success, he decided to found his own music label, The Arcadium, while still working with Universal.

His debut album came out in July 2018, with the title “Warrior Songs”, which was also available as a music pack for the popular video game Dota 2. His second, and so far latest new TheFatRat album came out in September 2021, titled “Parallax”. TheFatRat’s biggest hits to date are “Unity” (2014), “Monody” (2015) featuring Laura Brehm, “Fly Away” (2017) featuring Anjulie, and “The Calling” (2020) also featuring Laura Brehm.

In December 2018, his video went viral on YouTube in which he complained about how a copyright fraudster used the copyright system on Google’s video sharing site to claim the revenue for his original song “The Calling”. Thankfully, YouTube managed to sort out his issue. As an act of gratitude towards the YouTube community standing up for him, he announced that all of his music would be free to use for creative videos on the platform, without fear of him claiming or copyright striking any video.

In 2020, Redbull.com released a 10-minute documentary on his life and successful career as an EDM artist. You can check on the page above where the nearest TheFatRat concert is playing to you.
