Tiësto Biography

Tijs Michiel Verwest, better known by his stage name Tiësto, is a Dutch DJ and music producer. He was born on January 17, 1969 in Breda, Netherlands. The young Tiësto started listening to local Dutch radio jockeys at age 12. By age 14, he was DJ’ing himself at school parties. In his teens, he was performing early live Tiësto concert shows in nightclubs all across Breda, particularly at a place called “the Spock”, where he would be playing in the DJ booth from 10 PM to 4 AM on weekend nights. His most commonly played EDM subgenres were new beat and acid house at the time.

His earliest releases came from 1994, under the aliases “Da Joker” and “DJ Limited”. As a result, he was discovered by someone at the Dutch label Basic Beat Recordings who ended up signing him. However, in 1995, he switched labels and signed with Lightning Records. He released 4 EP’s (Extended Plays) through them. He also switched his name to “Tiësto”, in accordance with the trend among Dutch DJ’s at the time of having Italian sounding stage names that end with an “O”. In 1997, he founded his own label, Black Hole Recordings.

The next year, in 1998, he teamed up with fellow Dutch DJ Ferry Corsten to form the EDM duo “Gouryella”. Their debut single, the self-titled “Gouryella”, became a major international hit. The duo is still together to this day.

In April 2001, however, Tiësto decided to put out his debut solo album, with the title “In My Memory”. It became a moderate hit, peaking at the #25 spot on the Dutch album charts. The same year, he got to go on his first Tiësto concert tour in the US, as a supporting act for famed American EDM artist Moby on his “Arena2 Tour”. Tiësto’s second album, “Just Be”, became his first international hit record, charting at #3 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart in the US. As a result, he got to perform a live Tiësto concert show at the opening ceremony for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Since then, Tiësto has put out 5 more studio albums, thus he has 7 in total. The best selling one among them is “Elements of Life” from April 2007, which sold around 200,000 copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the new Tiësto album is set to be released in February 2023, with the title “Drive”.

The biggest hits in the Tiësto setlist to date are “Adagio For Strings” (2004), “Secrets” (2015) featuring KSHMR and Vassy, “God is a Dancer” (2020) featuring Mabel, and “Don’t Be Shy” (2021) featuring Karol G. Because of his great influence on the genre, he is sometimes called the “Godfather of EDM”.
