Tokio Hotel Biography

Formed in Magdeburg, Germany, Tokio Hotel is a pop rock and alternative rock band. After the release of the demo album as Devilish (before Tokio Hotel) and losing a major record contract, they released their debut German album "Schrei" in 2005, selling over 500k copies worldwide and producing four top-five singles. Their 2007 releases, "Zimmer 483" and "Scream," sold over 2.5 million copies combined and earned them an MTV Europe Music Award for Best InterAct.

In 2001, twin brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz, along with Gustav Schäfer and Georg Listing, formed the band Devilish and later renamed it Tokio Hotel as they started performing in talent shows. Bill Kaulitz's participation in a children's Star Search led to being discovered by music producer Peter Hoffmann. Under Sony BMG, Hoffmann, David Jost, and Pat Benzner guided the teens in songwriting for their first album, terminated by Sony before its release.

Tokio Hotel's second album "Zimmer 483" saw the release of the single "Übers Ende der Welt" in 2007, later reissued in English as "Ready, Set, Go!." A delayed tour was adjusted for a new stage design. Their first English album, "Scream," released also in 2007, incorporated English versions of previous German songs. Singles like "Monsoon," gained popularity, with a video for "Scream" following suit.

In 2008, Tokio Hotel started a North American tour, playing at the Bamboozled festival in New Jersey. Their music video "Ready Set Go!" received a nomination for Best Pop Video at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, where they won Best New Artist. Returning in October for a month-long tour, they released a behind-the-scenes DVD, Tokio Hotel TV – Caught on Camera.

In 2013, Tom Kaulitz confirmed a new album for 2013 on the "BTK Twins" app. Despite not winning MTV's Musical March Madness in 2013 as promised, Tokio Hotel gained significant fan support. Plans to release a new single in 2013 and the album the next month did not materialize, leading to a delay in their release.

In 2016, Bill Kaulitz revealed plans for a new album, "Dream Machine," and a world tour in 2017. By late December 2016, the band began promoting the album with the release of two songs on YouTube: "Something New" and "What If." The official release date for Dream Machine was announced for March 2017. Despite parting ways with Universal Music, they signed with Starwatch Music.

In 2023, Tokio Hotel teased a Christmas song with photos of Bill and Tom Kaulitz on a festive set on Instagram. Shortly after, on that same year, the band unveiled the Amazon Music Original song "Your Christmas" and shared a Behind the Scenes video on their YouTube channel.

Bill and Tom Kaulitz expanded their reach beyond music by launching the "BTK Twins" app on Android in December 2011 and on iOS in 2012. The app allowed fans to interact with the brothers through photos, videos, and text messages, fostering a close connection. However, in 2013, the app was taken down from both the Android and iOS stores to make way for the upcoming release of Tokio Hotel's new album.
