Uzi Biography
Uzi was a short-lived alternative rock band from Boston that existed from 1984 to 1987. Led by Thalia Zedek fresh from her Dangerous Birds days, they only dropped one EP, but man, what an EP it was. "Sleep Asylum" hit the scene in '86 like a sonic hand grenade, mixing noisy guitars, tape loops, and thunderous drums in ways that had even the Village Voice taking notice, ranking it fifth in their year-end poll. Think Sonic Youth's artsy chaos but with a distinctly Boston twist.
Though band tensions cut their run short after just one release, they left such an impression that Matador Records dug up "Sleep Asylum" for a reissue in '93, proving sometimes the briefest flames cast the longest shadows. The band scattered to the winds afterward, but kept making waves in different ponds. Zedek joined Live Skull before forming Come and launching a solo career. Danny Lee pounded drums for El Dopa, while Bob Young and Randy Barnwell cooked up A Scanner Darkly.
The most fascinating post-Uzi tale might be Phil Milstein's - this guy founded the Velvet Underground Appreciation Society and ended up playing with the band's own Moe Tucker in Between Meals. From tape-loop experiments with Thurston Moore to collaborations across Boston's musical underground, Uzi's members kept pushing boundaries long after the band's end.
Just goes to show sometimes the most influential bands are the ones that don't stick around long enough to become famous.
